As the first time-travel story in the history of American literature, Rip Van Winkle narrates how the protagonist suf- fers from identity loss and recognition after his time travel from the North America under the British colonization to the United States of America at its independence. Through the depiction of Rip＇ s time travel, the story expresses Irving＇ s ambiguity in his post-colonial resistance, that is, on the one hand, Irving opposes Britain＇s colonization of the North America; on the other hand, he also opposes the way of using violence to overthrow colonialism and worries about the political chaos of America after independence.
