上官周是清初闽画史上一位承前启后的大家，其画风根植于福建本土，兼收并蓄，与华番、黄慎并称为“闽西三杰”。他早年师从汀州画家熊介玉学习写真人物，深得“波臣派”精髓；又入黎士弘“溉本堂”研读诗文经典、临习历代名家真迹，并在其引荐下，随卸任汀州知府鄢翼明游历江浙、增长见识，从而开启了其一生的职业艺术生涯。

As a distinguished painter in Fujian at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, Shangguan Zhou in- herited the past and enlightened the following generations of artists. His painting style was rooted in Fujian, and he learned far and wide. He, Hua Yan, and Huang Shen were referred to as the Three Fujian Outstanding Painters . In his early years he learned portrait painting from the Tingzhou painter Xiong Jieyu and mastered the essence of the Bochen School. And in Li Shihong＇s Gaiben Hall, he studied classical poetry and copied ancient famous artworks. Under Li＇s recommendation, he made a travel in Jiangsu and Zhejiang to expand his horizon with the former Tingzhou magistrate YanYiming, thereby opening up his professional artistic career.
