崇拜老虎的传统源自古代游猎族群的精神文化中。华南拜虎传统的分布范围从武陵到罗霄,或许亦到达武夷山脉;在文化发展过程中对野猪和虎的崇拜曾互相结合,后来虎作为崇拜对象普遍取代了对野猪的崇拜。山岭拜虎族群影响了所谓“后石家河”文化的形成,殷周时期在长江中游之江南地区以湖南、江西为主要分布范围,存在着一个拜虎的古国网络体系,其在商周甲骨金文中被称为“虎方”。

숭배로호적전통원자고대유작족군적정신문화중。화남배호전통적분포범위종무릉도라소,혹허역도체무이산맥;재문화발전과정중대야저화호적숭배증호상결합,후래호작위숭배대상보편취대료대야저적숭배。산령배호족군영향료소위“후석가하”문화적형성,은주시기재장강중유지강남지구이호남、강서위주요분포범위,존재착일개배호적고국망락체계,기재상주갑골금문중피칭위“호방”。
The tradition of tiger worship was originated in ancient nomadic cultures. In South China, the tradition of tiger worship has distributed in the area from Wuling to Luoxiao, and possibly reached the Wuyi Mountains. During the development of culture, the worships of wild boar and tiger have merged; and later, tiger has generally superseded wild boar as the worship object. The tiger-worshipping mountain people have affected the formation of, so-called, post-Shijiahe culture. During the Yin and Zhou periods, in the middle reaches of Yangtze River, especially in the Hunan and Jiangxi areas, there existed a tiger- worshipping network of ancient states, which named as Hufang in the oracle bone and bronze inscriptionsof the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.
