Narrative texts were collected from 32 Chinese EFL learners and 32 American and British native English speakers to examine the person reference in Chinese EFL leamers' spoken English narrative. The results showed that Chinese EFL learners were more likely to use nominal a- naphora which leads to the so-called over-explicitness in the case of person reference. The main/secondary character and episode complexity were the main correlates to the o- ver-explicitness, when exploring the seven characters and the five story moves. The comparison between Chinese EFL learners' spoken and written English, however, exhibi- ted no improvement concerning over-explicitness in Chi- nese EFL learners' written narrative even though more planning was allowed. The over-explicitness problem can be accounted for in terms of: 1 ) EFL learners' problem with general pattern of person reference in English;2) attention management for referring to multiple characters in narrative production of multi-episode stories;and 3) the limited capa- bility in English pronominal and zero anaphora.
