What Leo Strauss values Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi mainly lies in Jacobi＇ s sharp critique of Enlight- enment philosophy. Jacobi believes that Enlightenment represents just a form of intellectual tyranny and its dog- matism is no less than the Catholic Church, which is nothing more than a disguised ＂Jesuitism and the philo- sophical magisterium＂. Through Jacobi＇ s fatal criticism on Enlightenment philosophy, Leo Strauss sees through the nature of modem rationalism. William H. F. Ahman＇ s accusation of Leo Strauss is not from the philosophi- cal passion for freedom of thinking, but the political fanaticism of an Enlightenment priest, which is hence simi- lar to that made to Socrates.
