弗吉尼亚大学是最早开始接纳中国留学生的美国高校之一.但是我国国内的留学生史研究很少涉及有关该校的中国留学生信息.通过对弗吉尼亚大学1949年以前中国留学生基本情况的实地考察,我们发现,该校历史上不仅有数量不菲的中国留学生,而且生源情况复杂多样;他们接受广博的自然科学和社会、人文科学的教育,不少人获得了相应学位,并在学成回国后发挥了重要作用.相关的研究有助于我们深入了解那个时期中国留学生在美国的学术活动,也启发我们应深入挖掘和整理从留学国别获得的资料,从而保证留学史研究能够真实、准确地反映历史原貌.

The University of Virginia is one of the American universities which took the earliest enrollment of Chinese students in history. However, domestic studies concerning the Chinese exchange students in America so far have rarely touched upon the aca- demic activities of the Chinese students in that university before 1949. Afieldstudy in the University of Virginia reveals that there are plenty of Chinese students in the university before 1949 and they are of different types, such as full - time students, special students and students from summer quarters. What~ more, many of them have been awarded various academic degrees, including degrees of bachelor, master and doctor during that period of time. After they returned to China, they have made great contribution to the social reform and political, economic constructionof the country. This research offers us a better understanding of the aca- demic activitiesof the Chinese exchange students in the particular historical period and justifies that a lot of down - to - earth work is needed in our search for the first - hand resources in the study of the history of Chinese exchange students, upon which an au- thentic and objective representation is based.
