茅盾既是著名的小说大师特别是长篇小说大师，又是著名的文学理论家特别是新文学早期的理论开拓者。他的小说创作与他的文学理论素养和前期的文学经验有着密切的关联。本文从诸多原始材料出发，详细探讨了茅盾从事小说创作之前和从事小说创作之初的文学理念和实践，此中蕴含着茅盾和整个新文学创作的诸多要义。

Mao Dun is generally regarded as both a famous master on novels ,especially the volu-minous novels ,and a pioneering theorist of Chinese modern new literature .His creation of novels is closely related with his knowledge of literary theories and early literary experiences .Based on a great deal of original materials ,this paper will explore Mao Dun’s literary theories and practices before and at the beginning of his engagement in the production of novels ,w hich is found to have contained many important ideas of novel writing applied by both Mao Dun and Chinese modern new literature .
