1917—1918年间的第一次护法运动时期，唐继尧参与护法，打的旗号却是“靖国”。围绕着护法的目的，特别是护法军政府元帅职务问题，孙中山与唐继尧相互发出了数十件电报，反复争论，形成一场“电报战”，成为民初政坛上的一大奇观。这是造成护法运动失败的重要因素。

1917—1918년간적제일차호법운동시기，당계요삼여호법，타적기호각시“정국”。위요착호법적목적，특별시호법군정부원수직무문제，손중산여당계요상호발출료수십건전보，반복쟁론，형성일장“전보전”，성위민초정단상적일대기관。저시조성호법운동실패적중요인소。
During the first phase of Constitution Protection Movement in 1917 - 1918, Tang Jiyao was involved in the movement under the banner of bringing back peace to the country. Around the purpose of the movement, especially in the issue of Marshal office of the military government, Sun Yat - sen and Tang Ji - yang had a heated debate, with dozens of telegraphs sent between them. This event became a major spectacle in then politics, and was also an important factor which caused the failure of Consti- tution Protection Movement.
