近代上海报刊领先全国发展，离不开上海文化的孕育，而上海近代报刊又参与建构上海文化，促进上海文化特色形成。上海报刊是西方文化输入的窗口，它的本土化形成了中国近代报刊的模式。上海市民文化催生了小报，小报又成为市民文化的温床。在20世纪30年代，上海报刊成为左翼文化运动的阵地，先进文化又促进了报刊业和新闻业务的革新。
근대상해보간령선전국발전，리불개상해문화적잉육，이상해근대보간우삼여건구상해문화，촉진상해문화특색형성。상해보간시서방문화수입적창구，타적본토화형성료중국근대보간적모식。상해시민문화최생료소보，소보우성위시민문화적온상。재20세기30년대，상해보간성위좌익문화운동적진지，선진문화우촉진료보간업화신문업무적혁신。
The near-modern Shanghai gave birth to news press, while, at the same time, the near-modern Shanghai press promoted the birth and development of Shanghai culture. The appearance of near-modern press marks firstly the input of Western culture. Shanghai＇s earliest newspapers, were mostly founded by foreign merchants or missionaries introducing to the Chinese readers the Western knowledge of science and political systems at various levels. Secondly, the minor newspapers providing recreational functions had become hotbeds, nurturing a Shanghai citizen culture. Lastly, in 1920s and 1930s, the newspapers and journals had become the front of left-wing cultural movement.
