土司制度研究之内容丰富，是民族历史学、政治学、民族学、社会学等社会人文多学科研究的重要对象之一，这些学科的有机结合构成土司学学科群；在研究理论与方法上以历史学为主同时兼采多学科理论与研究手段与分析工具，土司学具有综合性与专门性之个性特征，有重要的学术价值与现实意义；中国近代政治重建与民族政治关系建构视野下的土司制度与改土归流问题，是土司学研究的重要课题之一。
土司製度研究之內容豐富，是民族歷史學、政治學、民族學、社會學等社會人文多學科研究的重要對象之一，這些學科的有機結閤構成土司學學科群；在研究理論與方法上以歷史學為主同時兼採多學科理論與研究手段與分析工具，土司學具有綜閤性與專門性之箇性特徵，有重要的學術價值與現實意義；中國近代政治重建與民族政治關繫建構視野下的土司製度與改土歸流問題，是土司學研究的重要課題之一。

The study on the native chieftain system, with its rich content, is an important subject of social sciences and the humanities. The discipline group of the native chieftain system is formed by subjects like ethnohistory, politics, ethnology, sociology etc. The study of the native chieftain system applies muhidisciplinary research theory and method （-which are mainly based on that of the history）. It shows both comprehensiveness and technicality, and is of great academic value as well as practical significance. The study of native chieftain system and bureaucratization of native officers from the perspective of political reconstruction and construction of ethnic political relations in modem China is one of the most important issues in this academic field.
