白居易是唐代科举制度的实践者、探索者,曾有过＂十年之间,三登科第＂的壮举,先后以进士科、书判拔萃科和制科登第。白居易于试前苦节备战,有的放矢针对试项拟制私试、自难自砺。他试前拟作的赋、判、策成为科场士子追捧的范本。白居易赞成踏实勤奋的应试态度而反对浮躁请托之风,并从惟才是举的观念出发要求打破常限,不拘身份延揽人才。因深知科场艰辛不易并秉持宽怀息事的态度,白居易对科场弊案中的参试举子及涉事考官给予了最大限度的同情理解、体恤宽恕。

An explorer and practitioner of the imperial examinations in the Tang Dynasty,Bai Juyi once＂succeeded three times in the imperial examination within ten years＂,successfully admitted in the examinations of civic service,secretary-selection and talented workers. Bai made careful preparations before the examinations,challenging himself by particular self-made exam items. Those imitated Fu-poems,discussions and analyses he made before examinations became the models other candidates tried hard to obtain. Bai took a favorable attitude to the examinations and hated the fickle style and trend of seeking inglorious help. From a meritocratic perspective he advocated selecting talented workers regardless of their backgrounds. Understanding well hardships in the imperial examinations and holding a tolerant and kind attitude,Bai Juyi showed the greatest possible sympathy with and understanding to those candidates and exam officials who played cheats in the examinations.
