对话是建立在相互承认、相互尊重与相互学习的基础之上的,能够欣赏“他者”的价值,才会兴发互相参照的意愿.由此才能形成真正的对话状态。从容忍到承认、尊重、参照和学习是认知的过程.也是感情认同的过程.本着这样的信念,杜维明多年来致力于推动一系列丰富的对话活动,力图将儒家思想作为对话文明的典范来展示.这收到了意想不到的效果。未来的儒学发展.必须要超越所谓“古今中西”之争,以开启传统与现代、科学与宗教、中国与西方,乃至族群、性别、语言、代际、阶层、国家、区域和信仰之间的对话之门.

A real dialogue is based on mutual recognition, mutual respect and the willingness to learn from others. The appreciation of the values of the otherness generates in one the desire to take into consideration the other's opinions, which in turn, allows both parties to get into a good dialogue. Starting from tolerance, we can progress to mutual recognition and mutual respect, and then, to the levels of consulting one another and learning from each other. I believe that this is a process of cognition as well as emotive identification. This is why I made great efforts over the years to stage a series of enriched dialogues, in which Confucianism is shown as an exemplary mode of cross-culture dialogue. All these dialogues prove to be highly fruitful. The future development of Confucianism should aim to bridge the gap between the ancient and modern, the Chinese and the Western, and to open the door for the dialogues between tradition and modernity, science and religion, China and the West, as well as the dialogues between different ethnic groups, different sexes, different languages, different generations, different classes, different nations, different regions and different religions.
