Repetition is a frequent rhetorical device in poetry. Repetition of identical or almost identical sentences is not comon in fiction. Faulkner, however, violated this convention in his masterpiece The Sound and the Fury. This repetition is not the result of his lack of formal education as many early criticisms have contended, but is artistically motivated, and carefully organized and planned. His repetition produces some emotional effects in the reader and enhances the theme.
