中国文化史有两个坐标：一个是时间的坐标，一个是地域的坐标。时间坐标的确立，分期是关键。理想的分期法是依据文化自身发展的实际情况灵活处理，不必完全按照朝代更迭来进行。中国有着丰富多彩的地域文化，它们是统一的中国文化的各个分支，也都对中国文化的发展做出过各自的贡献。若将时间和地域结合起来，便会注意到文化中心的形成和转移。文化中心的变动往往造成文化的突飞猛进。

History of Chinese culture is researched on and documented either temporally or spatially. However, with the combination of research approaches, the formation and transformation of cultural centers becomes quite noticeable. Geographically, the dissemination of Chinese culture and the shifting of the cultural centers are much more active and mobile along the west-east direction, which is parallel to the main waterways in China, than the north-south direction. Given that cultures of the north and the south are significantly different, the shift of a cultural center along the north-south direction usually results in seminal cultural pro- gress. This paper suggests a joint effort among academia to construct a new approach and model to present a collective picture of cultural evolvement in the co-ordination of time and space, and to represent the cultural interaction and imbalance among different regions.
