Teaching centers in American universities have long been involved in promoting the development of university teachers, improving the teaching level, bettering the quality of instruction and helping students achieve effective learning. The historical development of teaching centers includes the stage of early development and exploration, the period of continued growing and development as well as the phase of building brand characteristics and enhancement. Based on the continued extensions and perfection, they, consequently, gradually become the supporting organizations for specialized learning and teaching on campus. Studying the development of teaching centers in American universities along with summarizing its characteristics and experience has an important reference value to the establishment of the Center for Faculty Professional Development in China and its improvement of quality.
