在《荀子·子道》中孔子最心爱的门徒颜回认为“仁”的根本既不在于使人爱己，也不在于爱人，而是自爱。北宋政治家王安石基于事功的立场否定颜回的“自爱”话语，但贪功进取的结果也使他陷入政事的泥淖而难以自拔。面对悲剧性的人生，于立德和立功两端之间何去何从，实际构成了中国传统儒家无法绕行的一个重大课题。

In ＂Zi Dao＂in Xunzi, Confucius＇ favorite disciple Yan Hui said that the root of benevolence is neither to make others love you nor to love others,but to love oneself. Wang An-shi, a famous politician in North Song Dynasty, denied Yan Hui＇s view from the standpoint of making contributions. However,the impulse to achieve great progress also got him into the mire of politics. The lives of Yan Hui and Wang An-shi were both tragic, and how to make balance between the two types of lives become a big problem which the traditional Chinese Confucian cannot evade.
