抗美援朝战争爆发以后，割断中国教会与西方世界的联系成为中共明确的政策。通过控诉，反帝爱国运动逐渐与宗教革新运动合流，教会中的“帝国主义分子”成为斗争的目标。在宗教革新运动中，开封华阳中学学生与天主教外籍主教阳霖等人的矛盾日趋激化，“华阳”事件是双方的一次正面冲突。“华阳”事件最终以驱逐阳霖等外籍传教士结局。由于处理仓促和行政执法的不严谨，这种驱逐激起了一部分教徒的抵触情绪。但从政权建设角度视之，这种驱逐契合了民众的社会心理，为新政权赢得了政治认同，也为中共对教会的改造打下了基础。

After the outbreak of the war to resist US aggression and aid Korea, cutting off the connection between the Chinese church and the Western world became a clear-cut policy of the Chinese communist party. The anti-imperialist and patriotic campaign was integrated with the religious innovation by the means of accusation. Consequently, the existing imperialists in the churches became the targets of the campaign. During the religious innovation the conflicts between the students of Huayang middle school and the foreign priests such as the Catholic bishop Yang Lin intensified day by day. Huayang event was one of the head-on confrontations between the two sides, which resulted in the expulsion of the foreign clergymen, including Yang Lin. Due to the rush in dealing with the matter and the lack of rigors in the administrative enforcement, this expulsion aroused the feeling of antagonism among some of the believers. However, in the perspective of regime construction, it satisfied to the people＇s social psychology, won political identification for the new regime and laid the foundation for Chinese Communist party＇s reformation of the church.
