What is the essence of library, which has been considered as the research object, is a funda- mental issue discussed intensively in theoretical research of Library Science. Some scholars pointed out that the cognitive model of the theoretical Library Science research was showing essentialism-oriented apparently, so it should be discarded. Another fraction of scholars refuted this viewpoint and criticized it fiercely. The scholars who were eager to research the essence of library aimed at proving the legitimacy of library science as an independent discipline to the whole academia and society. The current situation is that the empirical research is an effective way to construct legitimacy of Library Science. To strengthen the legitimacy of Library Science, scholars should focus on research issues which are also attractive and important to whole academia and society based on the nature of Library Science, as well as present the research findings in a formal and scientific way which other disciplines are accustomed to.
