英语词literature原有学问、著述的意思，19世纪后期特指诗歌、戏剧和小说等审美性著述，形成现代西方文学观念，秉承“诗艺”传统，彰显科学与艺术、功利与审美的区分。古汉语中的“文学”意为“文章博学”，强调文章的学术内涵和经世作用。日本学者用“文学”对译literature，通过笸川种郎的《支那历朝文学史》中译本传入中国。中国学者接受了新的文学概念，观念上则形成两种主要倾向：以梁启超为代表的一派注重文学的明道经世功能，将审美当作是特殊有效的手段；以王国维为代表的一派强调文学作为语言艺术的审美特性和审美价值。

The original meaning of the English word literature referred to knowledge and writings. But in the late of 19th century,it was adopted especially in the aesthetic works concluded poetry,drama and fic- tion thus shaping the modern western literary concepts with emphasis on revealing the distinctions among science and art,utility and aesthetic. The ＂literature＂ in the ancient Chinese referred to ＂articles and vari- ous learning＂, which stressed academic connotations and social functions. Japanese scholars translated liter- ature into WENXUE. This word was introduced to China in the book of Shina Literary History in the Ages Past written by Sasakawa. Although Chinese scholars accepted this new literary concept, there were two main tendencies among them：one was represented by Liang Qichao who regarded literature as a special ef- fective means to present social functions ; the other by Wang Guowei who emphasized aesthetic characteristics and literature values as a kind of language art.
