The discussion on the future of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the understanding of the conceptual basis of TCM and the relation between TCM and modern Western medicine. The conceptual basis of TCM is manifested in its understanding of human body as a combination of both physical and spiritual components, dis- ease as disturbance of the balances inside human body, treatment as a process of coordination of various elements of human body, health maintenance by daily diet, and life process as reflection of temporal rhythms in natural world. Regarding to the relationship between TCM and Western medicine, some hold that TCM could be integrated into Western medicine;some hold that TCM and modern Western medicine are categorically incommensurable systems; and some hold that TCM and modern Western medicine are weakly incommensurable. Accordingly, there are two ap- proaches to the modernization of TCM -- transforming TCM into modern Western medicine, and modernizing TCM with the help of modern science while retaining TCM' s conceptual basis. The integration of comparative philosophy of science, mass cuhure, sociology and anthropology into the research on TCM will offer new approaches to descri- bing and understanding TCM.
