Although education is a universal need, traditionally schools came into being for the sake ofmeeting certain particular needs. One type of school was the research university developed in Germany. It serveswell in its special capacity. But society does not need a very large number of researchers. Today, it is assumedthat everyone should go to school, and the longer the better. Unfortunately, the research universities have come tobe regarded as normative along with the academic disciplines of which they are composed. The whole educationalsystem has been shaped by this norm. This means that very little education is oriented to the wellbeing ofstudents and society. The idea that success means success in research creates a climate of individualisticcompetition and fails to prepare people for an ecological civilization. The ideal of wisdom has been lost. It is timeto develop a quite different educational system in which a few will be prepared to do research in highlyspecialized disciplines, but most will be helped to become well-rounded human beings prepared to serve societyin many diverse capacities as it seeks to transition to an ecological civilization.
