哲学史上关于意义理论存在弗雷格式和后期维特根斯坦式两种研究进路。弗雷格对“意义”与“指称”的区分和应用引发了“弗雷格难题”。伊莱休·卡茨认为他的第三种研究进路可以解决这一难题。卡茨指明了维特根斯坦前后期思想之间存在着两大关键共同点，认为第二种研究进路也并不尽善尽美。通过对前两种研究进路的批判，卡茨对第三种研究进路的建构背景、优势、思路和具体方法进行了阐述。

In the history of philosophy, there are two approaches to study theory of meaning： the Fregeanapproach and the approach of later Wittgenstein. The distinction between meaning and reference and itsapplication triggers ＂Frege＇ s Puzzles＂ that derive from it, while Katz thinks that his third approach could solvethe problem. Then he points out two pivotal common points between thoughts of earlier and later Wittgenstein,and thinks that the second approach is not perfect. By criticizing the two former approaches, this paperillustrates the construction background, advantages, ideas and the specific means of Katz＇ s third approach.
