To examine the reference grid effect on encoding the locations of visual objects in working memory, two experiments （using the 2 -back paradigm ） were conducted with the manipulation of the certainty of objects＇ locations, and the stages of grid presented. Experiment 1 demonstrated that participants would choose categorical or coordinate coding according to the certainty of objects＇ locations. Experiment 2 showed that the grid given at the stage of encoding improved the memory of the locations of the objects but at the retrieval stage it would hamper the recognition.
