根据安多藏语方言诸土语群的不同语音特点,可以将其划分为三个语音层。在这三个语音层中,辅音由繁到简或彻底消失,复合元音由少变多,声调从不区别词义到区别词义,是白马藏语的主要特点。通过对白马藏语语音特点的综合分析,得知其已基本失去第一语音层的特征而接近康藏方言,说明白马藏语是安多和康藏方言之间的一种藏语次方言。除了语言自身发展的原因外,经济、宗教、历史等社会因素对语言演变具有重要影响。

According to phonological features of different dialect groups, Amdo Tibetan dialects can be divided into three phonological strata in which the main characteristics of Baima Tibetan are shown such as the change of consonants from complicated ones into simple ones and finally into total disappearance; the increasing number of diphthongs; and the change of tones from not distinguishing word meaning to distinguishing word meaning. A comprehensive analysis of the phonological features of Baima Tibetan reveals that it has lost the features of the first phonological stratum and becomes similar to Tibetan dialect, so it can be defined as a sub - dialect between Amdo Tibetan and Kangba Tibetan dialects. Besides the development of language itself, social factors like economy, religion and history also have important influences on the change of language.
