By introducing four potential intervening variables, namely, transac- tion cost, manufacturing cost, competition intensity and technology innovation, and sub-dividing manufacturing into three types, respectively labor, capital and technology intensive manufacturing, this paper explores the mechanism of industri- al agglomeration influencing international competitiveness of the manufacturing indus- try. The findings show that although industrial agglomeration promotes the competi- tiveness of manufacturing as a whole, it has a negative influence on that of capital-in- tensive manufacturing; three intervening variables, transaction cost, manufacturing cost and competition intensity, have a positive intervening effect on international competitiveness of labor-intensive manufacturing, but their effect on that of capi- tal-intensive manufacturing is negative; as for technology-intensive manufacturing, the intervening effect of only manufacturing cost is significant; although the agglomeration of capital and technology intensive manufacturing both promotes tech- nology innovation, the intervening effect of technology innovation is not significant under both circumstances. The above conclusions may provide insights into the formulation of policies and the adjustment of industrial agglomeration.
