代表性经验推理是人们根据事物与事物间的相似度大小判断事情概率的一种经验推理方法。人们在理解话语时，受此经验推理的影响，倾向于选择与社会文化规约一致的理解方式，而忽略具体交际语境或说话人的特殊交际意图，因此有可能引起误解。实验研究证实了代表性经验推理会影响话语理解，使语用推理偏离理想模型，是误解产生的认知心理根源之一。
