Since the early nineteenth century, many historians have written a lot of books on the British Industrial Revolution, This essay discusses several important works of theme The author points out that the British Industrial Revolution has epoch-making significance. In history it is more important than all the ordinary political revolutions. Then the author discusses the ＂Debate on the Standard of Living＂ which has been carried on for a long time by the historians. In fact the positive contribution by the British Industrial Revolution goes far beyond the evaluation by the ＂optimists＂. But the negative side of the Indutrial Revolution is still greatly bothering millions upon millions of people in the industrialized western countries. And we cannot neglect it too. Therefore the author stresses that the role played by the British Industrial Revolution has two contradictory sides.The technological and economic development brought about by it gave men the opportunities to escape from the sufferings from the nature, Meanwhile the ~nventions of technology in communication and transportation shorten the distance between peoples and countries.
