遭遇天崩地裂的近代中国,同时迎接着西方现代性的全面入侵,救亡图存的时代要求迅速转化为更为具体的两种措施:改造中国和改造国民性。“如何改造国民性”的问题,正是在近代中国人遭遇严重的人生问题与意义危机时萌生;在救亡图存的出路探寻中并轨于以“革命”为核心的改造中国的历史潮流;并在先进的中国人对时代新人的设计中完成思想发动和理论准备;却又终止于抗日战争、解放战争和社会主义改造运动;因而,“国民性改造”的近代任务直接延续为当代使命,并遗存在现代中国教育改革和创新的历史重任中。

Suffered from violent social turbulence and invasion of western modernity, the requirements for saving the nation from subjugation and ensuring its survival had been changed to two more specific measures: to reconstruct China and Chinese people's character. The question how to shape the national character emerged just as Chinese people were encountered with a severe crisis of life significance, integrated into the historical trend to reconstruct China with the core of revolution on the way to save nation and people, accomplished the preparation in theories and thoughts during the process of designing for a new era by the people of foresight and wisdom, but ended by War of Resistance Against Japan, War of Liberation and Socialist Reform Movement. Thus, the task of reconstruction of Chinese people' s national character in modern times has directly continued to be a contemporary mission and maintained in the historical duty of modern China' s educational reform and innovation.
