As a leading African American woman writer in the contemporary world, Toni Morrison has made a great contribution to African American literature by representing in her works black females mostly ignored in the past. Her first novel The Bluest Eye analyes the psychological life of African Americans, especially African American women, to reveal the mental persecution they suffered in a white-dominated society and the tribulations black families experienced for estrangement from the black culture and for habitual self-denial. Morrison thus sheds a new light on the African American quandary and suggests that the dominance of white culture has put black culture in crisis. The novel, by representing three black women and their families, examines the historical trauma of cultural erosion from various perspectives to argue that African Americans should maintain their ethnic culture while seeking for equal political and economic power.
