The present paper is built on some key notions of linguistic adaptation theory and pragmatic identity theory,proposing that the analysis of pragmatic identity be approached from three dimensions： variability,negotiability and functionality. It is argued that speakers＇ identity is not passively and linguistically represented. Instead,it is dynamically constructed by strategic negotiation with the interlocutors.
