嘉峪关地处河西走廊西部,是丝绸之路上的重要关口。明代嘉峪关作为边镇,主要发挥其军事防御、控制西域、中亚与中央朝贡的职能。清顺、康年间嘉峪关的职能尚没有太大变化。但随着乾隆年间新疆的统一,嘉峪关成为腹地,军事职能减弱,其检查过往行人以及管理进出口贸易的职能凸显,作为连接内地与新疆的重要关口,进入了一个新的发展时期。
