Cultural self-criticism is crucial for the prosperity of a culture. ZHANG Cheng-zhi conducts the Hui＇s cultural self-criticism consciously in his essays,instead of eulogizing his own ethnic culture blindly. On the basis of promoting the essence of the Hui＇s culture to set up the cultural confidence,he reflects on and criticizes such drawbacks of the Hui culture as ethnic betrayal,small business tradition,internal division,secularization of the religion,lack of humanism,negative attitude towards aid,etc. His criticism on his own ethnic group is of great significance for both his literary career and the Hui＇s cultural development.
