早期希腊思想史上有一个重要现象，即神话思维向经验思维的过渡。《神谱》提出混沌之神作为万神之祖。人们接受了混沌之神的说法，但发现无法在神话思维中理解混沌之神。这便是混沌之神理解困境。泰利士认为，混沌是一种像水一样的存在（水是万物的本源）。泰利士的说法虽然使人可以理解混沌，但却把理解的基础从祖传神话转向个人经验。这是一场思维方式的革命。

There was a transition from myth thinking to empirical thinking in early stage of Greek thought. When the Theogony asserts that Chaos is the oldest God, it raises an issue of understanding it in myth thinking. As a god, he governs nothing, and therefore we cannot imagine his shape and characteristics based on the things he governs. Thales proposed a solution in which the thing he governs is like water, which can form out everything. Thales＇ proposal helped people understand Chaos, but placed the understanding on the basis of individual experience. This is a revolution in thinking.
