This paper builds on the concept of academic community developed by Professor Zhang Lingyun and applies it to the field of tourism. The idea of academic community provides useful tools(structure, classification, ranking and so on) to develop areas of knowledge. However, whether the academic community can be used to develop knowledge of a new field such as hot spring tourism is unknown.Hot spring tourism is a branch of tourism science. However, such research is still in it infancy; in other words, the studies of hot spring tourism can only be called a potential discipline. Potential disciplines here refer to those fields that for the time being lack a mature scientific form, although they have the potential to become one in the future. As a potential discipline, its knowledge is relatively scattered and the academic power is still weak; therefore, this paper argues that the concept of knowledge community rather than academic community should be used to understand a potential discipline such as hot spring tourism. Although knowledge community is a weaker notion than academic community, it may provide a better perspective to explore a phenomenon that is still at a bourgeoning state of scientific development(e.g., a potential discipline). Research at the level of knowledge community may be more useful to develop research that spreads discussion beyond the borders of the academic field itself. For instance, the method of trail-tracking as used in this paper can offer some important clues in comprehensive searching and tracking. The paper shows that trailtracking method may promote strong research by accurately mining and developing comprehensive knowledge, placing it on a consistent foundation, and discovering new aspects in its subject. Once this stage is sufficiently developed into the ultimate academic research phase one can talk of an academic community. Hot spring tourism research will thus set the basic stages by looking into the cultural turn in geography, by taking into account vulnerable groups in sociology, and by using data mining in computer science as theoretical supports. With regard to the study of knowledge community on hot spring tourism, trail- tracking method will include very important aspects that are involved in logic starting origin, academic team, graduate student groups, hot spring profession, hot spring business, associations and organizations, international communication, the knowledge carrier and other related ones. Accordingly, we can construct a knowledge context for ourselves, and it may help in bridging the boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration. In this way, the paper reaches a number of innovative conclusions. First, it introduces the concept of knowledge community into tourism research, bringing out a turning point of great significance.Second, it shows the power of trail- tracking as a suitable tool for studying developing areas of knowledge such as hot spring tourism research. Third, it contributes to strengthen tourism research by focusing on the initiative of subjects in the tourism system, by providing solid foundations to an eventually vulnerable bourgeoning area, and by mining the potential energy of knowledge to improve self-building. In a nutshell, the application of this method to hot spring tourism knowledge community not only reflects the current situation of hot spring tourism research, but also provides directions for future academic action.
