提到理学家的著作，人们往往想到“语录”二字，语录体俨然成为理学家的标识性文体。印刷业的发达为语录体流行提供了强有力的“硬件”支持，这是促成理学语录流行的外在机缘，理学家对待口传与书写的态度、理学家的以道统自任的传道使命感、迫切感以及语录体文体自身的自由性、切己性则是语录体流行的内在原因。但语录著述因其口语、口传性质而存在可理解问题、可信性问题，以及与传统的经典著作之关系问题。因语录而废经典、废文章现象，则为汉学批评宋学语录体流行之两大弊端。

As it is well known that yu-lu （＂records of conversations＂） became one of the most characteristic styles of writing in the Neo-Confucianism. The boom in the so called yu-lu＇s popularity could not be separated from the highly developed printing business at that time, whereas Neo-Confucian strong sense of mission and urgency, the freedom and personality inherent in yu-lu style itself were its internal causes. It met many problems during its development such as reliability, understandability and its relationship with the Confucian traditional Scriptures. Neglect of Scriptures and literature caused by yu-lu＇s popularity were the two big drawbacks, which was usually pointed by the Han school of classical philologists in the Late Ming and Early Qing Periods.
