This paper studies China's division of labor and status of trade in Global Production Networks (GPNs) based on statistics on trade in value added (TiVA) by using the global value chain (GVC) and revealed comparative advantage (RCA) indexes. The result shows that while China has an extensive participa- tion in GPNs, its position in the GVC is low and has followed a "V-shaped" development mote, which is correlated with the decline in the propotion of indirect exports of value added and increase in the proportion of foreign value added; the position of China's manufacturing industries in international division of labor is obvious; labor-intensive industries are at relatively higher positions, developing towards the upstream, and with significant but declining competitiveness, whereas capital and technological-intensive industries and knowledge-intensive industries have an increasing participation in the GPNs, developing towards the downstream and contributing relatively less to domestic value added.
