费孝通一生经历了三次学术生命，每一次学术生命关注的主题均有所不同。这种研究主题的跳转使得人们更多地将目光停留在费孝通学术谱系的断裂处而忽略了其间的内在连续性。事实上，费孝通终其一生都在探究和追问一个根本问题，即在中国现代性进程中如何处理传统与现代之间的关系，怎样在传统与现代之间实现融通和保持富有张力的平衡。费孝通以实地研究为基本方法，从活历史和小传统的双重角度切入，对之做出了极富洞见的回答。然而，费孝通的思想深处又有着难以纾解的紧张。这种紧张不仅折射出中国现代性过程中一代知识分子的精神困境和转型中国社会的结构性矛盾，也彰显出人格、学术与社会之间的巨大张力。

In his whole life, Fei Xiaotong experienced three academic periods of different research themes. The changes of research themes caused people to pay more attention on the fractures than on the internal continuity of his academic pedigree. In fact, Fei Xiaotong devoted his whole life to inquiring basic questions like how to deal with the relation between tradition and modernity in the process of Chinese modernity and how to integrate the two with a balance of tension. He gave insightful answers to the questions through field research based on living history and little tradition. However, deep in his thought, there was a tension between personality, academic filed and the society which reflected the spiritual dilemma of the Chinese intellectuals of his generation and the structural contradiction of the transformed Chinese society in the process of modernity.
