周作人提倡晚明小品,推重张岱,认为：张宗子是个都会诗人,他所注意的是人事而非天然,山水不过是他所写的生活的背景;张岱散文是公安、竟陵两派文学融合的结果,成就要高于这两派;张岱有些文章与现代文的情趣几乎一致,其文学精神和写法与日本俳文相近,开启了近世新文艺,实为中国现代散文的源头。周作人对张岱的评论对后世研究产生了极大影响。当前,张岱研究期待新的有深度的研究成果,应在周作人评论的基础上,注重晚明越中文派研究和张岱散文世俗性、现代性的阐释;同时,注重张岱著作的点校、整理和《张岱年谱长编》的编撰等基础文献建设。

Zhou Zuoren advocated essays in the late Ming Dynasty and preferred those of Zhang Dai. Zhou contended that Zhang was an urban poet laying stress on personnel rather than nature and landscape was the background of what he wrote and that Zhang＇s prose was the integration of Gong＇an and Jingling schools and superior to them. Zhou also believed Zhang＇s works were of modem appeal, with their literary writing similar to Japanese narrative of epiphany, opened up a new modem literature and art, and was the source of Chinese modem prose. Zhou＇s research has a great influence on later generations. Currently, profound researches on Zhang Dai on the basis of Zhou＇s comments are expected and attentions need to be paid to the research of Yue- zhong-wen School in the late Ming Dynasty and the interpretation of secularism and modernity of Zhang Dai＇s prose. Meanwhile, stress should be laid on the book proofreading, sorting of Zhang＇s works and the compilation of Chronological Compilation of Zhang Dai＇s Works.
