Drinking a Bowl of Tea by Louis Chu truthfully portrays New York Chinatown＇s bachelor society in the 1940s which was formed primarily on account of racist immigration restrictions imposed by American govern- ment. The novel highlights a series of problems that existed in New York Chinatown as it was undergoing radical social and ideological transformations. The essay intends to survey the potential ethical crisis within Chinatowns from the perspective of society, marriage, family and generational relations at the time, in view of a solution to conflicts between Chinese and western ethical ideas via integration.
