我国义务教育年限与世界中等收入及以上国家的义务教育基准年限一致，但低于其义务教育平均年限0．48年；我国义务教育年限超过发展中人口大国，与中等收入国家和同等收入国家基本持平，但与高收入国家存在一定差距。当前，世界各国实施9年义务教育最为普遍；各国义务教育年限呈逐步延长趋势，延长的方向是学前教育1～2年或高中阶段教育；各国实施义务教育年限的长短，大体由该国的经济发展水平、政府重视程度及文化教育传统所决定。
