Written by Lewis Caroll, Alice' s Advenutures in Wonderland is one of the best writings of children literature. Since its publication, there have appeared a number of simplified versions. Within the framework of systemic functional linguistics, especially Halliday' s accounts of complexity in language, this article takes a quantitative-qualitative-comparative approach to the original writing and eight simplified versions published in China, and explores their complexity in terms of lexical density and grammatical intricacy. The result shows that the highest grammatical intricacy and lexical density can be found in the origi- nal and one of the simplified versions. This study reveals that 1 ) it is reasonable to approach the different versions of the same writing within the general framework of complexity in language, and 2) the variation found in lexical density and grammatical intricacy across distinct versions, to some extent, can be explained as arising from the various options the author and the rewriters have made in the lexicogrammatical system based on different readership orientations.
