Products can be divided into hedonic goods and utilitarian goods.The choice between hedonic and utilitarian alternatives can be influenced by construal level.Through three experiments this empirical study tests the influence of construal level on hedonic consumption and utilitarian consumption.Experiment1 shows that people have more preferences on hedonic consumption under high-level construal and have more preferences on utilitarian consumption under low-level construal.Experiment 2 and Experiment 3 re-spectively examine the impact of social distance and possibility on hedonic consumption and utilitarian consumption.It is found that people have more preference for hedonic consumption under far social distance or low possibility,yet more preference for utilitarian con-sumption under close social distance and high possibility.
