格特鲁德·斯泰因是20世纪初的一位美国旅法作家。文学评论界对她的认识大多停留在写作的创新上,赞誉其为美国现代主义文学的创始人。西方医学是西方文化的表征,对美国在19世纪末和20世纪初的殖民扩张起到积极的推进作用。殖民医学研究殖民地上西方医学的推广和传播。斯泰因的小说《三个女人》出版于帝国殖民扩张时期。本文从后殖民主义视角,透过当时优生学的发展,挖掘医学想象如何被运用到帝国政治中成为帝国优生学以及殖民医学,并对美国移民政策起到重要的影响。分析还发现小说文本反映出作家的殖民主义意识。

Gertrude Stein is an American writer living in France in the early twentieth century. The traditional comment on Stein is still about her creative writing skills as the founder of American Modernist literature. The Western medicine is the symbol and characterization of Western culture and contributes to colonial expansion. Colonial medicine is concerned about spreading of the Western medicine. Stein＇s Three Lives was published at that time. This thesis, adopting a postcolonialist perspective, explores the application of medical imagination to the imperial politics, and reveals how the empire eugenics exerts an important influence on the American immigration policy. Stein＇s colonialist consciousness is also exposed in this thesis.
