本文运用《江西商人信范》等新史料,对江西商人经营方式、与牙行的关系、帮会组织、所利用的交通运输业等几个前人研究尚薄弱的问题作了新的探讨。由此可见,江西商人带着夏布、纸张、粮油等产品,利用长江水道,在安徽安庆、芜湖,江南溧阳、无锡、常州、南浔等城镇进行贩卖,再由上海、太仓等贩回棉花等物,至江西吴城等地销售。他们较多地运用了协作、合作经营方式。利用本地牙行发货,牙行则收取定额的牙用钱;建立了自己的行会组织,对所贩卖的夏布抽厘,与牙行及行会之间建立了相对稳定的定价机制;还充分利用了长江水系比较便利的交通运输系统以运送货物、传递信息。

Relying on the newly discovered Jiangxi Merchants ＇ Business Letters,this paper studies several hitherto largly unexplored or otherwise under-research issues related to business history,including the Jiangxi merchants ＇ mode of operation,the relationship between the guilds and the broker agencies,the transportation networks employed, etc. The study reveals that the Jiangxi merchants would bring such commodities as summer cloth,paper,cereal and oil and travel along Yangtze branches and trade in such places as Anqing and Wuhu in Anhui,Liyang,Wuxi,Changzhou and Nanxun in the Jiangnan area for cotton from Shanghai and Taicang,which they then sell in Wucheng of Jiangxi. In the process,they frequently resorted to business cooperation and utilized local brokers to facilitate trade; they built their own guilds; and they took full advantages of the convenient transportation of the Yangtze to deliver both goods and information.
