Ian Barbour points out that the optimistic view of technology sees technology as the liberator without regarding the environmental costs and human risks of technology,and contributes to the concentration of economic and political power. Pessimism of technology sees technology as a threat to human life and an autonomous and uncontrollable force. Ian Barbour proposes an idea of social construction of technology. He thinks of technology as an instrument of power,and sustains that there are contextual interactions between science,technology and society. He argues that the redirection of technology toward basic human needs is possible.
