从民族殖民地理论的提出，到共产国际四大对其作出正式修正，共产国际对殖民地、半殖民地的分类经历了由先进与落后两分法，至发达、初步发展与落后三分法的转变，对民族革命运动的态度也由摇摆不定走向坚决支持。列宁民族殖民地理论的提出和转变，影响了中共一大纲领的形成，以及自一大至二大中共对中国社会性质、革命性质、革命对象、革命动力、革命策略、革命任务和目标等方面认识的转变。在此进程中，中共派往共产国际的代表张太雷与共产国际领导人萨发洛夫对民族殖民地理论的修正起到了十分重要的推动作用。
