目前,翻译学的研究对象及其名称都嫌含混。中外学界普遍接受赫尔姆斯在《翻译学的名与实》中的相关论述,把＂translationstudies＂作为翻译学的学科名称,不过也有学者执着于＂translatology＂。文章旨在论证赫尔姆斯论述的失当之处,确定＂translationstudies＂和＂translatology＂的指称范围——前者适于指称翻译现象的相关研究,而后者则是翻译之为学的恰当指称。

Up to now,the name of translation as a discipline has not been settled yet.It is held that＂translation studies＂is the right name for the discipline of translation,which has been argued and ascertained in Holmes＇ s essay——The Name and Nature of Translation Studies.Some scholars,however,recognize the discrepancy,so they use＂translatology＂to signify translation as the subject name.Through analysis of Holmes＇ s arguments and discussions of translation,it is concluded that the name＂translation studies＂is not proper for translation while＂translatology＂is a better candidate.
