西辽河流域人面岩画在岩画系统中是最具特色、文化内涵最为丰富的一类，而突出同心圆眼睛表现形式的翁牛特旗人面岩画在整个西辽河流域岩画中更具特殊性。在当前无文献资料佐证及缺乏有效的史前岩画考古测年方法的情况下，发现人面岩画图像与西辽河流域史前遗物纹饰之间的内在联系，对于人面岩画断代的意义，显得尤为重要。运用图像学比较分析方法，通过对人面岩画与相关史前文化器物纹饰的细致比较与客观分析，可以大致推断翁牛特旗人面岩画发生的时代框架。
