中国自晚清开始向西方国家派遣留学生,留美和留欧教育开启了留学教育之风。在19世纪60年代到90年代兴起的洋务运动中,派遣留学生的留学教育是它对教育改革的一个重要组成部分。其中幼童赴美留学和船政局派遣的留欧学生是晚清政府派出去的第一批留学生,开创了中国近代留学教育的先河。开展及分析留美与留欧教育二者产生不同结果的原因有利于得出对留学教育的评价,进而引起对当今留学教育的反思。

China began to send students to study in western countries in the Late Qing Dynasty. Going to the United States and Europe opened the page of overseas education. Sending students to study abroad for education was an important part of its education reform in the period of Westernization Movement which was risen in the 1860＇s to the 1890＇s. The children studying in the United States and students sent by the ship-administration school to Europe were the first group overseas students by the Late Qing gov- ernment, thereby starting a pioneer stage of Chinese overseas education in modern times. Analysis of cau- ses of different results produced from overseas education both in America and in Europe helps to obtain e- valuation of overseas education, thereby causing the reflection of today＇s overseas education.
