明代内阁阁臣是辅助皇帝决策的人员，地位尊崇。阁臣的地域和户类分布都比较广泛，为实现人才的优势互补，以便提高最高决策层的决策效率和质量，并将各边远落后地区，以及社会各阶层的人才纳入国家统治集团核心以增强明廷的凝聚力、维护国家的安定与统一都有积极的意义。但阁臣在各省直间的分布又不平衡，相对集中于经济、文化发达和科举实力雄厚的南方各省；在年龄构成上，阁臣的中进士、入阁年龄及在阁年限等都符合人类生理和心理发展的一般规律，说明明代阁臣队伍的年龄结构和活力状况良好。
